What is a reference?
A reference is confirmation from a previous employer or other approved source about a candidate's employment and conduct. What clients require of them varies widely by sector.

</figure>Verification is the part that matters. A reference on letterhead proves nothing unless somebody confirmed it came from the person and organisation it claims to.
Sectors differ substantially: some require a set number covering a defined period, with gaps explained. Knowing the client's requirement before starting saves collecting the wrong thing.
Dates are often as valuable as opinions, because they close gaps in employment history that would otherwise need separate evidence.
What goes wrong in practice
- References accepted from personal contacts where the sector requires employers.
- Referee identity never verified.
- Chased after placement rather than before it.
